1. You will be delighted to learn that the following Resolution was
passed last night by the Senate. Senators Edwards and Hagel were the
original authors, and they were joined by 40 of their colleagues as
co-sponsors (incidentally, 20 Republicans and 20 Democrats -- truly
Katie Clapp said "We are extremely pleased at the number of
Senators supporthing this resolution and the degree of bipartisan support
for raising awareness of Fragile X. Also, both Senator Edwards' and Senator
Hagel's office have been in contact with the committee working on the
Children's Health Act and have been assured of the committee members'
commitment to Fragile X."
If your senator is listed below as a sponsor of the Resolution,
please write to him and thank him for this milestone in Fragile X
recognition! This is important.
2. In addition, we met with representatives of Subcommittee Chairman Frist
and Senator Kennedy Tuesday, at their request. They indicated that although
Fragile X is not included in the Children's Health Act as introduced
yesterday, their Senators have made a commitment to work with the Fragile X
community on additional specific provisions in the Children's Health Bill as
it goes through for final passage. We trust that this commitment is firm,
is made in good faith, and will be carried out in the days to come. In his
statement upon the introduction of the Children's Health Act,
Senator Kennedy said,
" I look forward to working with Chairman FRIST, members of the
Committee and others to assure that the needs of children with Fragile X are
met in the final legislation."
If you have written Senators Frist or Kennedy in the past, please
write to them now and thank them for this commitment.
