Yes they can be cleaned. My son is camp staff at Camp Tri-Mount in the
Catskills of NY. The soil there is all red clay. The Staff hats are off
white w/ a maroon Brim and Staff are required to wear CLEAN hats every
day. So this has become a wekkly ritual when he comes home. I usually
beg him to wear a large carabiner on his belt so he can clip it there
when he is not wearing it (doesn't always remember though).
You can buy a hat frame, which is made of plastic and holds a BB stlye
cap with in it. They are very cheap (I've seen them at dollar stores),
readily available in many places and they last forever. You put the hat
in the frame and wash it in the regular washing machine on the permenent
press cycle with your regular washload (a few less clothes as it is
bulky). Remove it from the washer and leave the hat in the frame until
dry. Don't put it in the dryer. For stubborn stains use a toothbrush
and Dial Soap for spot treatments before you wash the whole hat. They
come out great.
