scouts-l Mail Archive for July of 2000: Re: Scoutmaster Conference for your own son

At least in my case I would not do a SM conference for my son. I opted, both
for Scoutmaster conferences and for his Eagle project, to have another adult
(Troop Committee Chairman for his Eagle Project) take the lead role.
Personally, I think SM conferences can be more meaningful if provided by
someone other than "dad", even when dad is the SM. Primarily this is because
the SM has continuous contact with the youth and probably has more
"conferences" with his son than the poor Scout can stand. In many cases, I
think we are also so close to the situation when it is our own that some
valuable points can get lost that others, not quite so close to the youth,
would recognize and use as good discussion points.
In his six years as a Scout, while I was Scoutmaster, I also did not sign off
on any of his merit badges.
Best of luck, and "Be Prepared" for the ride of your life in the new capacity,
