Been there, done that. I consulted with my (backpacker) doctor before heading
into bear country about this exact concern. Her reply was that it's a widely
held wive's tale that bears investigate women who are menstruating because they
respond to the sexual triggers. There is NO evidence that human menstruation
interests bears any more than any other smell, and maybe even less as it is not a
food source but one of us stinky humans. There is also NO evidence that bears
prefer menstruating women over non-menstruating women or even men. But I would
advise that the ladies treat any used items as you would food garbage--up in the
bear bag or canister at night.
