<< You need a Chevrolet/GMC Suburban, the National Car of Texas: seats 8,
cargo space, luggage rack, dual air, drives better than a van, and can pull
a trailer if you need it. Down here, every other family has a Suburban. We
take 500 mile trips, packed to the limit, with no complaints from the boys. >>
I don't know, seems I recall Texans coming to Oklahoma for our Scout Leader
Suburban Fundamental training (SLSF). There is so much room in these back of
these things that we refer to the rack on top as a canoe rack. And that is only
because the Scouts complain if we stick the canoe inside.
This discussion got me to look at how far our Troop travels to get the best in
scouting, and I noticed that in the last year, our Troop has camped in every
state bordering Oklahoma which includes Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, and
Arkansas. That list doesn't include Minnesota and Canada. Oklahoma has a lot to
offer in the outdoors, but we enjoy what other states have as well.
While traveling to Orlando Florida on our family vacation last month, I noticed
a Houston Troop at a rest stop near Lafayette Louisiana. I think it was Troop
624. They were a big Troop with a couple of boats and canoes. I was curious to
learn where they were going, but the scout I asked couldn't tell me much because
he was excited to play on one of the boats and our tour leader (my wife)
wouldn't let me find the SM because she was in a hurry to swim in Pensacola.
They looked like a fun Troop. We traveled much of Sunday in Florida and I was
excited to see Scouts at every stop. Florida Scouting looked very active.
Roman, I hope you find a solution. Our Troop is big enough that we rent 15
passenger vans on long trips, and we aren't the only ones. Last year on our way
to Camp Alexander in Colorado, we noticed eight 15 passenger vans from three
different Troops in the parking lot of a fast food joint. All going to different
camps. It's an easy way to move a lot of Scouts a long distance.
Have a great Scouting summer.
