The good in Scouting is treated no differently by the media than any good in
our society, as non-news. That fact that anyone is surprised by this is the
only thing that surprises me.
As for Bryant Gumbel's remark I find it refreshing to have those in the
entertainment biz that calls itself "news", be so straightforward in their
views. I also happen to agree that Knight is a bleeping idiot. The BSA and
any organization is always at the mercy of "supporters." Just because a
person or organization supports some small aspect of the BSA, it does not,
and should, not imply a 2-way street. I'm very sure that the Klu Klux Klan
also "supported" the BSA position, I don't want them associated with the BSA
any more than Knight's Family Research Council.
The Scoutmaster pedophile sensationalism? Well the BSA certainly is
germane to that story, in fact it is that story! A SM is accused of abusing
many boys in his troop, where the heck was that Troop's committee and
parents? Where the heck was anybody in that district, that council? Fact is
these sorts of "news" items sell, and will continue to sell.
I dunno, there's just something about Fridays that invites pot-stirring!
