"The problem I see, is 22 boys, and what sounds like only two adult
leaders. That's a lot of work for the leaders."
We did have four dads come out for an overnighter (one mid way and three the
last day). I appreciated their presence - but the Scouts do not view these
adults as the "leaders". This is the sad reality. Yes, it is a bit of work
for the SM and I (I serve as Committee Chair), but I suppose the difference
is that we are willing to take a week of our vacation time to do this with
the Scouts. We try to recruit others - it never happens (another reality).
"What we do in our troop is send 1 leader for every 5 scouts."
I wish we could depend on that sort of participation from the adults.
I'll honestly tell all that I fully realize that the SM and I are setting
ourselves up for a classic "burnout". I am trying my best to recruit other
active adult leaders. It's just not happening. I have given my resignation
as Committee Chair (effective in March 2001) and as the date draws closer I
see a little panic setting in (on the other adult's behalf). I want to
become the first ASM Venture for our Troop - concentrate on that.
