scouts-l Mail Archive for July of 2000: Summer Camp problem

Two first year
Scouts decided to play "hooky" a couple of days. As a result they did
not receive as many rank advancements (first year camper program) or
merit badges when compared to the other 2 first year Scouts. When we
questioned them (the Scoutmaster and I) they made various sorted
excuses. In the final analysis we had two Scouts who seemed less
concerned than their parents. While the SM and I feel a bit of
responsibility - we cannot follow all 22 Scouts around. And, considering
we had two other 1st year Scouts who did follow though and attend every
class/event what are we supposed to assume (beyond the obvious fact that
these two Scouts might not really care).
I would like to hear suggestions on how the others on this list have
handled this sort of situation.
I wouldn't do anything other than at the last meeting of the troop before you
go down to breakfast on the last day to list and formally recognize all the
advancement progress everyone made, mention the completions on MB's, and let
the fact speak for themselves. You can follow this up at the next formal
troop meeting in the fall when you formally award the badges ( you should
give the cloth MB's & advancement at camp as soon as earned IMHO).
The message will be rec'd all around.
