I defy you to find one shred of evidence in any BSA publication that refers
to homosexuality. THe HB says boys can ask parents or religious leaders if
they have questions. The SM handbook says we are to refer boys with questions
on sexuality to parents or religious leaders. The position papers written by
the BSA did not specifically address this matter at all until AFTER, repeat
AFTER MR Dale filed his suit. We routinely charter troops to organizations
and churches which do not exclude homosexuals; we routinely accept as
volunteers people whose religious beliefs (including "if you're not in my
church you are damned to hell for all eternity") and political beliefs are
not shared by all members--- the organization seems to go along with its
nonsectarian, almost libertarian views in this regard. There IS no published
"core belief" here, and because you think yours is *the* BSA core value
doesn't, for a certainty, make it everyone's.
I am pleased to see that the local Unitarians are keeping their charters,
preferring to work from within to change things (as per the section under
"obedient") and that the local councils have given out statements blandly
stating that CO's have always chosen their troops' leaders and will continue
to do so. That's the sort of non-reaction that's appropriate here, not the
unseemly (and to my view, thoughtless) "We WON!" that is being crowed in some
I commend to your attention the dissenting brief, which IMHO leaves a lot of
doors open for a revisitation of this issue. (I dare you.)
Meanwhile, the BSA may have a Pyrrhic victory here. The number of chartering
organizations and funding sources which specifically prohibit dealings with
an organization which discriminates on the basis of sexual preference is
long, and growing.
