OK, let me say this about my previous post. The camp manual did express this
change. (not to preregister) We had expressed this to the boys, but had them
go ahead and preregister with US (troop).
Sunday when we got to camp, we were told that EACH SCOUT had to go up and
sign up for the badges that they wanted. This was total chaos. Adult
leaders could NOT do this for them. OK, so when they did register and their
class was full, the scout was let down, went to another merit badge, it was
full, after 3 or 4 times of doing this, standing in line. There were NO
merit badges left that some of these scouts had not taken. Hence, the
downtime. We tried to get them in some of the other things. The older
scouts went on an Eagle Scout only trip (even though they weren't Eagle
scouts) there was room for them.
The younger boys, who had a lot of the "regular badges" archery, canoeing,
swimming, etc, etc. were left with a lot of DOWNTIME, at NO One's fault.
The camp just changed this policy, this year. We have been going to this
camp for YEARS and now it's decided to change after all of these years.
We filled the downtime, but we had 2nd year scouts that worked on ONE merit
badge for the entire week. This is when the homesickness set in, BECAUSE
they had so much down time and were not really active except with other troop
activities. We climbed the peak, made the raft, built a new sign for our
Troop out of logs, etc., etc. They ALL new how to lash, REALLY WELL!!!!!!!
before the week was over with, among other things.
That's not the problem, my question is,
IS THIS THE NORM!!!!!!! Camps not preregistering for summer camp. This
seems like a really chaotic way to do things if you ask me. And not only
that aspect of it, but wanting to know when and where my scouts were at all
periods of the day, or a scout signing up for something that he didn't have
the prerequisites for (however many times we had told them) , etc., etc.
