I'd let it be a surprise for everyone. Then be prepared for
taking advantage of those "teaching moments". The Scout may
seriously and thoughtfully come to you and ask why he was
not elected. And he should be told frankly why you believe
he was not and see if he can recognize what he should work
on to get elected next time. But if he acts out and carries
on, then you should have another response for him.
Disappointment can be a great teacher if we let it.
Last week I had to deal with the second kind of response.
Immediately after the call out, one of my disappointed Scouts
had to "ask" in front of the entire troop "Mr. Murphy, why
OA elections just a big popularity contest?"
