In Robert Heinlein's science fiction book for juveniles "Space Cadet", he
has a section entitled "Pie with a Fork" which discusses exactly this topic.
He phrases and outlines the answer much better than I can. Of course, that
book is copyright 1948, so perhaps the reasoning is obsolete.
