I'm in a bit of a quandary, and hope to benefit from the wisdom of the List.
A few weeks ago, while cleaning up some downloaded files, I came across a
file sent to my 15 year old son from one of the "young adult" (21+ but under
24) members of the JLTC staff. I am not particularly naive, but I was
absolutely dumbfounded by the e-mail -- blatant obscenities, sexual
descriptions of female genitalia - using crude and debasing language, all in
the format of an extended "poem". I showed the e-mail to my husband, and he
contacted the council office - and faxed a copy to them. We did not issue any
demands concerning this person, just our concern that he had crossed a MAJOR
line in sending this type of communication to a Scout. The adult staffer was
contacted by the council professional staff - and removed from participating
in any activity involving Scouts. The e-mailing staffer sent a letter of
apology, with the explanation that our son receiving the mail was a computer
error merging two different mailing lists. The council forwarded a copy of
the apology to us.
We spoke with our son, explained that "e-mailer" had been sending
inappropriate e-mail, and that the council had removed him from JLTC staff.
We discussed the specific e-mail with him, explained our feelings regarding
that level of "humor", and had a pretty good discussion with him in general.
He related that this was not the first e-mail sent - most concerned real
JLTC staff issues - but several others were of the humorous
dancing-real-close-to-the line as far as being appropriate.
Today, we received a phone call from the professional staffer, relating that
the SM/Director for the JLTC course had contacted him and asked that the
"e-mailer" be reinstated as a staff person - the reason for the request being
that the JLTC only has 2 adults serving on staff, and they need this person,
and the council pro wants our reaction and permission to reinstate this
person to JLTC staff. To add another layer of consideration, our son is
serving as a member of JLTC youth staff.
So, what do you think? Would you be comfortable with this person serving with
youth? Was the original action from council appropriate or overreaction? I'd
appreciate your thoughts and suggestions!
