I'm trying to find out if there are any BSA published recommendations at to
the length of Boards of Review. From an "unofficial" Boy Scout website, I
found the following recommendations regarding Boards of Review and the time
parameters they should ideally fall into:
Tenderfoot Rank: Approximate time should be 15-20 minutes.
Second Class Rank: Approximate time should be 15-20 minutes.
First Class Rank: Approximate time should be 20 minutes.
Star Rank: Approximate time should be 20 minutes.
Life Rank: Approximate time should be 20-30 minutes.
Eagle Rank: Approximate time should be 30-50 minutes.
These recommendations make sense to me, but they conflict with other
opinions in our Troop (e.g. "Life Rank Boards of Review should be one hour,
period.") So to try and help clarify things, I'm wondering if BSA ever made
any "official" recommendations.
Just to try to head off a few comments, our Troop's Boards of Review do not
involve re-testing of skills. Just lots of "philosophical" questions along
the lines of "Other than your parents, who do you think has influenced your
life the most?", or "Why do you think that the three Citizenship merit
badges are required for Eagle Rank?", or "What does it mean to say, 'A Scout
is Reverent?'", or "How has Scouting prepared you for the future?" You get
Please let me know if you know of any BSA documentation regarding the length
of Boards of Review.
