While a youth in Scouting, I was given the honor of serving on
a Flag Disposal Honor Guard at summer camp. The ceremony we
followed provided for the field of stars to be removed from the
stripes. Then both the field of blue and the stripes were cut
into smaller strips to quicken the burning.
While all of this was going on, a script was being read giving
some history and tradition behind the "Stars and Stripes."
We were told that the flag did not HAVE to be disassembled,
except to quicken/ease the burning. The trainer told us that
respect for the flag was utmost, then ceremony.
