Subject: Purchasing Rank and Merit badges
I also have a problem with
the whole concept of not being allowed to purchase rank and merit badges in
advance. Besides the fact that my Troop has a long tradition of giving out
rank badges immediately following a successful board of review, and earned
merit badges on the last day of Summer camp, it is just plain inconvenient
at times to worry about both purchases and getting the records to council.
I would much rather be able to get the records off to council and worry
later about picking up badges. There *must* be a system that allows us to
decide on the unit level how to present badges to the boys.
Don't buy them from that shop. It's just that simple. Order them from
National Supply or call a National Supply shop. The purchase of merit or
rank badges should have no relation to turning in an advancement form. In
rural or remote areas a shop is an unheard of luxury.
The scenario that a boy successfully completes a board of review, an SM
mails in an order and an Advancement form then waits till all is processed
and the rank badge is mailed back is hardly immediate recognition. Fact is
an SM knows a boy will complete a BOR. He just sat down with the boy and had
a conference. He SHOULD have the badge ready to award when the boy completes
the BOR. I see no reason that he can't fill out the advancement form and
send it to council the same night. Rank advancements are for the boys not
for pencil pushers! God help us if they start to demand that the advancement
report has to be entered into that debacle of a computer program before you
can buy a badge.
