scouts-l Mail Archive for June of 2000: Flag Day
Thu Jun 15 2000 - 13:40:53 CDT
Our troop normally meets on Weds, and this week we moved from the hall to a
camp site in the local forest. The boys did a search and rescue exercise
first, by the end of which the campfire was going nicely. The local American
Legion Post brought us 21 old flags to retire; the president got up to say a
few words first. Each Scout (we had 21 there) then laid a flag on the coals
while a SA tended the fire with a long stick (to keep bits of burning
synthetics in place).
It was a lovely quiet ceremony, and I'd recommend it. Now we're planning to
do it every year.
Caveats: Make sure everyone stays back and avoids the toxic fumes-- those
synthetics are nasty. Make sure all the melted gunk is gone off the fire ring
before you leave, and collect all the leftover grommets. Also makes a good
object lesson in fire safety, as in, "How fast do you think your curtains
will go up?"
