All Brass horns in the shop at the music store here are polished with Brasso.
The only time something else is used is when the lacquer is completely worn
off and it is buffed using a jeweler's rouge on a buffing machine.
You can polish or, if you have the equipment and the right rouge (it HAS to
be the finest jeweler's rouge), buff the brass clean and acquire lacquer in
either clear or gold in a small spray can and prevent the stuff from ever
tarnishing again with a light spray every year or so (depending on the amount
of time its used). Removing the lacquer completely is a whole-nuther story
involving a acid bath we also have in the shop and being very careful about
In fact, when a horn comes in and someone has worn away lacquer we often do
touch-ups using the spray and have no trouble matching it to the original
