This is an interesting thread. First, I am not sure that I would promote
attendance of a boy in a Troop or Pack that had exclusivelly all men or all
women as leaders. Both adult role models are needed for proper
maturation. Second any Troop or Pack that reduces it leadership potential
based on gender is doing itself and its boys a disservice. Never accept a
weaker substitute just because the gender is not yours.
That said, I guess I am still a sexist male. The better Rangers I have
dealt with at Philmont have been male. Given a choice of two EQUALLY
qualified candidates for the position of Scoutmaster I would choose the
male candidate. This is despite the fact that a very capable lady was a
wonderful SM in our SMF training course that I served on and I know two
great SMs who happen to be female. Having a choice of two EQUALLY
qualified candidates is a rich and unusual circunstance, under normal
conditions I hope I am always going to be smart enough to choose the most
qualified candidate and gender is not, in my mind, a qualification.
My observations - yours may be different.
