I have had one telling experience with unit insurance. On an outing my son poured
hot bacon grease down his shins. At the time my family was without health
insurance. When my concerned troop friends asked how it was going I recounted how I
had $400 in bills due to the accident. They asked me why I didn't ask about our
troop policy, which covered expenses beyond primary insurance. Our Organization
Rep. checked on the policy and found out they had forgotten to renew it (less than
$30.) They insisted on paying reasonable expenses out of troop funds.
This was never my intention but these good people insisted it was only right.
Now, as SM, it's the first thing I check on at recharter time.
BTW, my son is now an Eagle Scout and a Junior in Engineering at UCF in Florida.
