It was the home of William D. Boyce.
It is also centrally located in the USA, about two hours from Chicago's
O'Hare International airport, right along I-88, and is already home to the
Zeke Zeitelman Scouting Museum representing great community support in
Ottawa for Scouting.
Also in Ottawa is the William D. Boyce Memorial, with it's statue of the
unknown Scout by sculptor Tait McKenzie.
State parks within a 25 mile radius include...
- Buffalo Rock State Park
- Illini State Park (camping)
- Lake Shabbona State Park (camping)
- Matthiesson State Park
- Starved Rock State Park (camping)
Several private campgrounds are in the area. Nearby is a lock & dam on
the Illinois river with visitors center and a museum on the I&M Canal.
The I&M Canal Trail runs right through Ottawa for biking and hiking.
There is canoeing available nearby on the Fox river or Vermilion river.
Of course my #1 reason for wanting it in Ottawa is that it would be only
an hour away from my house.
Our troop plans to stop in Murray this summer for one last visit.
