I would like to ask the list for various ideas for a benefit fundraiser.
We have a situation where the mother of one of our Scouts has been
diagnosed with breast cancer. She has gone through surgery but not all
the cancer could be removed. She is currently undergoing the ordeal of
She is the mother of 5 boys. Her oldest transfered into our troop in
1979, her youngest just turned 18 and is continuing as an ASM. Three of
her five sons earned the Eagle Scout Award. I was Scoutmaster for all of
them and know the family well.
Her family has had at least one son in the troop for the past 21 years.
Next year her oldest grandson will be entering the troop to begin the next
generation of Scouts.
I had dinner with the family a couple weeks ago. She is a brave person
and is in good spirits. She talked and laughed and joked about things.
She's been through so many medical crisis over the years with her sons;
diabetes, epilepsy, car accidents, sledding accidents, sports injuries,
fractured vertebrae, double organ transplant. She's had to be tough to
keep the family going through so many devastating emergencies. I've not
seen a family with such a history of accidents and illnesses. Yet they
have always been a solid supporter of Scouting and are continually active.
About three years ago the oldest son had a kidney/pancreas transplant. We
helped with a dinner and auction to help raise money for that.
About four years ago we did another fundraising event for another Scout's
mother. She was stricken with Leukemia and was in need of a bone marrow
transplant. That family had been very involved in both Scouting and
For that we teamed up with the AYSO to put on a benefit Soccer Tournament.
The AYSO ran the tourney and the troop ran the concession stand. She
passed away before the date of the benefit, but with many medical expenses
not covered by insurance we were still able to help out quite a bit. Our
efforts and those of the community meant a great deal to the family.
Her oldest son has thought about doing a benefit pancake breakfast. We
have set a tentative date in early september. We have the church social
hall already reserved. I'm meeting with him Monday night to talk about it
I'd like to think we could do something better and bigger.
Besides a Fun Fair, Auction, Dinner, Breakfast, or Soccer Tourney; what
other ideas are there you might have? We may do a combination event.
I'm grateful for any ideas. It's a program area that I don't like to
think about very much. You don't want to think about ever needing that
type of thing, but life happens, and then the need arises.
Thanks in advance.
