I am against zero tolerance in any form.
Now that said, I want to bring up two questions. First, is it no longer
true that minors are protected by the Constitution and the spirit of
American Law? The reason I ask is that zero tolerance seems to imply that
any tool that is on the list will be used improperly. I think this means
the carrier is assumed guilty and cannot be proved innocent. Second, I
thought the legal definition of weapon involved intent? I might be
wrong but I would like an answer from a lawyer. I have carried a pocket
knife for 40+ years and I have considered a tool, not a weapon. I find it
very unnerving that someone else can over ride my intent and make it a weapon.
We have, by our slience, given the schools the authority to impose very
questionable policies in the name of safety. It is my stand that we start
to discuss this with our individual school systems and remove this
impediment to freedom.
