I think part of the Philmont position deals with the currency of the
training. I took a look at my Red Cross card a while ago and noted that it
was good for three years. The First Aid training for the scouts within
scouting could have been given anytime after they were 11 and if the age of
the trekkers is 14 to 20, there is no telling how long it has been since
they had training. If it has been 5, 6 or 7 years since the scout(er) had
training, how much will (s)he really remember
I think that they would also want to have a common baseline for the
training. Within the unit the boys receive their first aid training from a
wide variety of sources, some great and some marginal. (But, I also do not
think that the consistency of the Red Cross training is equal across the
Procedures do change over time. I keep my Red Cross card current and every
time I go back there are changes in how certain situations are handled.
(Compare the first aid training you received as a scout with that you
received as an adult...radical changes!)
I think that what they want to make sure happens is that the adults/youths
responsible for First Aid/CPR have received a current and quality course.
What they probably want to avoid is the situation where the unit leader
realizes at the last minute that they have missed this requirement and they
suddenly and hurriedly try to train each other.
Besides, it isn't too tough to get this done and we all could use a little
updating of our knowledge to scrape the rust off. They have given us many
months of notice that we needed to get it done. It is pretty well spelled
out in the information we all received last March. With a crew of multiple
adults and youth it should be easy to do.
