In a former life, I worked in education and specifically in a high school
that was "in transition" population wise. We had a young man attending the
school who was charged with felony murder and was out on bail. He had
attempted to "mug" an old man, and in the process, the man had a heart
attack and died.
The only weapon this individual used was intimidation. Following the
current spate of logic in our schools, we should probably force the students
to leave their hands and their bodies and their mouths at home since these
are what killed the old man in this case.
OTOH, perhaps we should ban criminals from our schools rather than trying to
blame and remove the inanimate objects which the criminals might use to
perform their crimes. New Jersey, in the infinite wisdom of the
legislature, has a law prohibiting minors from carrying beepers.
Technically, if a parent uses one of those "kid" beepers to let their child
know when to come home from playing, the child is violating that law.
People have been and continue to be murdered with penknives, axes (actually
haven't seen too many of them since Lizzie Borden), flower pots, matches,
fists, feet, and yes, even words or threats (see above). We can't remove
all the potential "weapons" from the school environment. Perhaps we need to
find board of education members and educators, as well as judges and
legislators, who know how to use the potentially most dangerous weapon of
all - their brains.
