My mom, starting when I was a kid in scouts, has repeatedly suggested to BSA
a merit badge that takes into account sewing, but expands on the idea. The
concept is more of a home ec approach, but I think the title was something
like "Personal Survival", or something like that.
Requirements included sewing, including basic mending like sewing on a
button and making something from a pattern; cooking and menu planning AT
HOME (how many scouts earned the cooking merit badge and then leave for
college and buy macaroni and cheese and ramen noodles, and NOT because they
are so cheap?); some cleaning (clean the bathroom, I think, was part of the
list); laundry (do the family laundry for a week, including folding and
ironing) and cleaning dishes (even using the dishwasher was fine, but a
scout had to do it for a week or two...).
We get scouts self-sufficient camping...they can cook in a dutch overn, but
have no idea what a toilet bowl brush is, how to load a dishwasher or wash
dishes without clorox...you get the idea. Personal preparedness was another
merit badge name she came up with.
Just wanted to pass along that while we lament on this list that something
"ought to be suggested", someone already has...15 years ago!
