Paul (and Others),
I think you have the right idea, but the wrong terms. For clarification:
A Rayado trek from Philmont can be used for a 50 miler. This is the
provisional program that pushes older scouts to their boundaries under the
leadership of 2 Philmont Ranger. They are done as backpacking trips, with
a custom itinerary. Often these crews will cover 100-150 miles over the 15
nights on the trail (I believe this is the length, I don't have references
where I can reach them). Rayado is Spanish for striped or boundary.
A Cavalcade trek would not qualify. This is a horseback trek taken under
the leadership of Wranglers (horsemen/women). These crews are available
similar to the regular treks, except they offer a lot fewer of them (8 or 9
sessions, 2-4 crews each time), they are shorter (5-6 nights on trail),
they only are available on specific dates, the itineraries are MUCH more
limited (have to make sure you have a place to keep the horses/burros and
have feed available where you stay) and they use a postcard lottery
I WANT TO GO BACK TO PHILMONT!!!!!!
