Don't give up on initiative games and Roses and Thorns. Sure the kids want
to play dodge ball where the biggest kid always wins. What about the
littlest one? Initiative games are a powerful means of having fun and still
learning about leadership and group dynamics. Go to www.pa.org and take a
look at some of their resources. Roses and Thorns is also a wonderful way to
let the kids handle group dynamics problems on their own, without an adult
telling them what they did wrong. If you ask a kid what went wrong and what
went right, you might be surprised to hear what they have to offer.
A reason why you might not be having any success is that both techiniques are
new. They ask the kids to "step out of the box", to take a little risk.
Sure they are going to be receptive, but if you make it a habit, something
they associate with every meeting or outing, then it no longer becomes new.
It becomes a part of the way your unit operates.
