Our Pack built a new 3 lane Pinewood Derby track using the aluminum tracking
sold through BSA Supply last year. We ordered the tracking through our local
Scout Shop. It comes with plans for how to build a wood framework to support
the tracking. However, we felt the framing as specified was somewhat light &
built a more substantial framework of oak. One our Den Leaders, who is handy
with electronics, built an electronic finish line for us.
We put a lot of time into building the track & are very proud of the quality
track that our pack will use for many years. However, the $600 cost you're
anticipating may be on the light side unless you have some materials donated.
Our pack spent nearly $1,000 for it's finished product. Like I said
though....it's a first rate track.
If your pack is interested in the aluminum tracking, I think you can get a
set of the framework / assembly plans through the Scout Shop before ordering
the tracking itself. Perhaps some of the woodworking members of your pack
could put together an estimate of costs for a track our your pack's liking to
see if you can afford such a project.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
