That has been a question I have had for a long time. There is definately
a lot of information coming at the kids by the required pamphlet they must
review with their parents before getting their first badgs, through YPP tapes
the BSA wants each unit to show to the kids. We have been doing this for
awhile now. Is it doing any good?
I also know, that some of kids are getting it in school as well.
Around here, there is virtually no information given to grade-school children
which parallels the "It Happened to Me" for Cubs.
In my capacity as YP trainer I also go around and show the youth movies to
units whose leaders either don't feel comfortable with the material
themselves or whose parents gave them too much flak, and they want to deflect
it to a council rep <G>. I have had more than one parent tell me that their
boy was able to help a classmate or cousin who was in an abusive situation
because he, the Cub, felt he knew how do the right thing after being
trained-- that is, recognize, tell his friend to resist, and report.
Everybody expects a Scout with First Aid training to be a community resource.
I have been proud to include these accounts, with all but the most general
details omitted, when I pitch YP to parents and leaders. They show that we as
Scouts are not just providing training for our members but are creating a
true community resource in the field of youth abuse protection too. It never
fails to get a positive response.
