None taken at all, Petey.
While someone mentioned ideas (light bulbs, ideas), here's an idea that I
would love to see someone out there consider.
As a "wrapup" for the Service to America campaign (which let's face it: it
hasn't caught on as much as they - National that is - wanted it to!), how
about the following:
For ONE WEEK during the month of AUGUST, Scouts and Scouters from EVERY
UNIT, in EVERY COMMUNITY in our nation should fan out to our local
libraries. Scouts and Scouters along with Venturers and Venturing leaders
should lead efforts to collect, store and place books of all kinds into our
public libraries and to send to other libraries around the country. Those
books which are not needed should be given to other organizations that
provide reading services to youth, and every District should undertake a
"Reading Makes It Happen" program of reading to youth in playgrounds,
community centers and even via cable television. In uniform.
With the push toward electronic communication, electronic storage and
electronic forms of sharing, we should be on the forefront of reminding our
citizenry that before one can read a computer screen, understand the
concepts, and share the information by writing and speaking, one must learn
how to read and have an appreciation for the written word...and despite our
collective attempts toward an electronic library, when everything doesn't
work any more.....there will be a book somewhere to read. To share. To
I encourage your units and your Districts and Councils to take on this
challenge to finish up our Service to America. What a way to do it...by
providing a needed service BEFORE school starts, to remind youth of the
purpose of schooling and to remind our adults of the need for literacy
services for youth AND adults.
