scouts-l Mail Archive for May of 2000: Re: District committee make-up

It seems that our Council holds to the philosphy that a "Name" is important
to the operation of our Council and District committees. However, in
practice, it does not work for the districts. As an example, our last
district chairman had resigned to take a new job in Kentucky. Our search
committee looked at 6 different "Name" people before finally settling on a
volunteer. "Name" people do not mind being on the Council board, but to get
them to work on a district committee is a different matter.
And what is a "Name"? The names that our council would like to have are not
"known" to the scouters. They have nothing in common with the volunteers.
Their primary claim to fame is that they hold "positions" in the committee
and hopefully, this will result in more money being raised!
However, many of these "Names" that do find their way on the committees are
almost useless when it comes to the actual work of the committee. We have
had many who merely wanted to list their "volunteer" work on their resume.
IMHO, it is better to seek out key volunteers that know scouting, know
scouters, and are willing to work. A key position that would benefit from
the "Name" person would be the Finance chairman. Otherwise, stay with
