Good Samaritan Award to Make Debut
The General Commission on United Methodist Men (GCUMM) enthusiastically
endorsed a new award for youth at their March 26, 2000 bi-annual meeting.
The purpose of the Good Samaritan Award is:
To provide a United Methodist Church an opportunity to recognize an
individual Scout or youth who demonstrates the attributes of ministry to
others through outreach, humanitarian assistance, or advocacy.
A United Methodist Church may honor a scout or civic youth agency member
(Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire or 4-H member) or any youth between the
ages of 12-19 who performs service project or in response to someone in need
of a "helping hand".
Presentation of the award is encouraged in a Sunday worship service,
preferably Scout Sunday, or any service deemed appropriate by the local
church. A handsome, engraved medallion with purple ribbon (to be worn
around the neck), an emblazoned certificate and lapel pin or rosette pin
will be made available as recognition items for the recipient, along with
recommended presentation guidelines. Cost is still to be determined.
The award will be made available July 1, 2000 through the Office of Civic
Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting Ministries, GCUMM. The award will be made
in cooperation with the National Association of Conference Presidents (NACP)
and the National Association of United Methodist Scouters (NAUMS).
For a brochure (available June 1, 2000), please contact the Office of Civic
Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting Ministries:
After many years of effort by Past Presidents Bob Cash and Buddy Davis, and
the Rev. Byron White, we have limited edition prints of a painting by Dr.
Kenneth Wyatt which NAUMS will be selling as a fundraiser. The painting has
been approved by BSA and is available immediately. (See www.naums.org for a
picture of the print and for ordering information.) This print would be a
great way to recognize someone who has made a big impact on your Church's
Ministry of Scouting.
