My son finished his Eagle April 17th. It took some nudges along the way. I'm
sure that if the BoR had asked him "Why?" at one point a year ago he would
have replied simply to "Get my Dad off my case." Now that it is done he
looks at it as a milestone. A true accomplishment in his almost adult life.
I finally finished my own Eagle kinda to get my Mother of my case but I have
blessed her ever since.
Scout Spirit takes many forms and I certainly would be that last one to say
that evidence of Scout Spirit has to fit the form that I most desire.
If the lad did the Eagle Scout deeds and is not otherwise guilty of grave
character flaws, he has earned the award. In my time there was no Eagle
Project with all the knobs that exist now. We did the merit badges, did the
leadership roles, performed service projects as a matter of course and when
it was all added up went for the Board of Review. I'm not passing judgement
on the service project requirement but performing it definitely separates
the Life Scouts from the Eagles.
