I will try to cover two topics quickly here.
The discussion on performance reviews has focused on the junior leaders.
Do any troops have procedures in place for performance reviews for adult
leaders? Personally, as a newer SM, I would welcome a formal committee
review and/or a parents review. If the process is an honest one, it could
help identify problems before they get out of hand. Does anyone do this?
What is your process?
We just ordered new flags and poles. The scouts as part of this process
have asked for more opportunities for public flag ceremonies. We have not
pressed for scout pants in the past, but have required anyone to be in a
flag ceremony to have scout pants. When I reminded the PLC about this,
they requested alternate pants. I promised to take the request to the
The committee has not met on the issue but it is on the agenda for the next
meeting. From casual discussions, the chance of alternate pants looks
bleak. I am remaining neutral on this issue until the committee has their
Personally, I can see the advantage of having a pair of pants that can be
worn for scouts and other non-scouting activities. However, for public
ceremonies, I see a real plus in being in full uniform. If they want to do
public things, they should wear required uniforms.
But...summer shorts, winter long pants, or always long pants so they only
have to buy one pair? Or does your troop require scouts to own both shorts
and long pants? I do think that what ever we wear at a public ceremony all
scouts have to have the same uniform. Do we just require pants and let the
PLC figure out what to require what-when-where?
