I, too, refuse to wear an OA flap on my green Venturing uniform, but I do it
for the exact opposite reasons of those Darryl mentioned. I believe that
Venturing has no place at all in the OA program.
In the time since I have been a youth in the OA, I have seen the average age
of active Arrowman get older (especially those in local leadership
positions). At the same time, requirements in the Boy Scout program have
made it so that the average Ordeal Candidate is younger. For some reason,
the OA seems to have fallen down on the job of getting these young Ordeal
members to become active. I believe that the new OA Rep position is one way
to help fight this disturbing trend. I'll admit that I was a little
disappointed that the OA Troop Representative was allowed as a leadership
position for the senior ranks because I believe that position is best used
to get a new arrowman active in his Lodge/Chapter.
The OA is not an older boy program. Venturing, Boy Scout Venture Patrols,
and Sea Scouting ARE older youth programs. It's bad enough that our older
Arrowman are keeping younger Scouts out of the leadership positions they
should be holding (Committee Chairman, Lodge Executive Board, Lodge Officer,
and especially Lodge Chief). These Scouts certainly don't need additional
competition for those positions from Venturers.
Venturers have their own program for holding District/Council level
positions of leadership through the Teen Leaders Council or Venturing
Officers' Association. There are also several unofficial experiments in
Venturing Honor Societies going on around the country of recognition is the
purpose of wanting Venturers admitted to the OA. If there is another reason
for wanting Venturers given this opportunity, I certainly cannot see it.
