Typical for a troop to set a maximum pack weight ot typical
to set maximum pack weight at 25% of body weight? :-)
The 25% number is tossed around a lot as a rule of thumb.
If you go over to rec.backcountry and post the same
question, you will receive responses ad nauseum espousing
different theories on optimum pack weight. I don't know the
definitive answer. I think the answer is, you carry what
you're comfortable with. A 100 lb. child might not be
comfortable toting a 25lb pack and I sure wouldn't be
comfortable carrying a 50lb load (- since i'm just a 'touch'
over 200lb ;-))
Start with a pack that is properly sized and fitted for the
Scout, add in essential personal gear, water and the Scout's
share of food, shelter and patrol or troop gear. What you
end up with is the required pack weight for that Scout. If
after all that, there's still room for the gameboy, comic
books, six pack of coke and boom box, I say go for it :-)
