Let me throw this out, from personal experience, about influence.
Several years ago (it may still be policy, I don't know), it was the
standing policy of the Attorney general's office of Missouri that, as long
as you met other qualifications, Eagle Scouts would be hired over a
similarly qualified non-Eagle scout applicant.
Second, while living in Denver, I applied to work for the federal court
system. There were many well qualified applicants---a very large pool. My
interview ended when the assistant clerk of the court noticed I am an Eagle.
As I recall, the conversation went this way:
"You say here that you are an Eagle. Is that correct?"
"Tell me about your project."
"(description of a project from 15 years previous)"
"You're hired. You start on Monday"
The project was incidental, I learned later. It was his way of making sure
that I wasn't lying on the application. By the way, I had no trouble
getting a week of a month later to attend Woodbadge.
