scouts-l Mail Archive for April of 2000: OA elections & female Venturing Scouts

My son the Eagle (not too proud...) is doing OA elections at various troops
now, and the Venturing crew want to know why their female members couldn't be
considered for membership given the requisite nights of camping, etc. Son
says that there is a requirement for First Class, which of course the girls
can never achieve in the BSA. He is also concerned that a boy could be in a
troop for some years, never achieve First Class, coregister in a Ship or Crew
and be eligible for the OA without ever having achieved First Class.
However, in Sea Scouting there are req's for some advancement levels (correct
me if I'm mistaken) that say "complete the requirements for.... (a given MB,
like small-boat sailing or swimming)" which a girl may do in fulfillment of
Sea Scout rank advancement but not be awarded the BSA MB. I don't see why OA
eligibility in Crew, Ship, or Post couldn't include a statement like
"Complete the requirements for First Class" analogously (hmmmmm, is that a
word?). This would establish a baseline competency level for candidates,
along with the camping & spirit req's.
Opinions on this matter?
My question is, if women, who have not been First Class, can be in the OA,
who couldn't a girl in Venturing?
