<As a related matter, I have a problem with what I consider to be the recent
emphasis on FOS for 20 to 30% of the council's funding and for the
targetted audience for the FOS appeals. I seem to remember that when FOS
was introduced the targetted audience was parents and leaders who were once
directly involved in the Scouting program and now have a lesser
I believe in supporting scouting as much as I personally can. Our family
participated in FOS a couple years ago, but have found it more effective
(and necessary), to support our son's unit directly.
The past two years, our troop hosted the district's freezeree. We had a
number of local business, banks, and citizens that donated supplies, money,
or time to help us put together successful events.
<I also know that there is a growing resentment for the heavy
handed approaches that attempt to increase the District's goal every year,
for the number of requests received per Scouter per year and for the lack of
equivalent fund raising by the Council Professionals and Executive Board. <
After the first one, a list was supplied to the DE (who is no longer here)
so he could also write thank you notes. Later, our list was incorporated
into an FOS list and we were asked to supply names of people to contact.
Needless to say, we did not and also asked that those businesses and people
be removed from the FOS list. These were people who wanted to see a direct
impact on the community by their contribution.
Most were people who had connections to the unit or worked with family
members who did. Two were monetary contributions totaling about $100. The
rest were donations of food, rope, gravel, use of a site, use of equipment,
or providing copies (at less than council cost). Many also ended up buying
popcorn during the annual sale. They are sources that would not give to
council, but will to groups in the community.
