Regarding "free web hosting" --
I had to move our own Troop and Crew websites from a private site to one
of the "free" ones, and I looked at about 10. I was able to find one or two
that DO provide free websites, with NO advertising. May I suggest
CROSSWINDS? I've found them to be quite available (that is, the hosting
doesn't ever seem to be down), and very fast at serving pages. The only
slow thing is the slowness of their FTP access (or, rather, their upload
speed), but that's liveable. They don't have a particular limit on size
(eg, # of MB).
Take a look:
Troop 566 & K6BSA: www.crosswinds.net/~troop566/
Crosswinds: www.crosswinds.net (note: NET, not COM)
You have to know a bit about creating the HTML files in the first place,
and using a program (eg CuteFTP) for FTPing the files to the server.
One of the "free" website hosting ones with no advertising
(free.ProHosting.com) just advised me this week that they're abandoning the
"free of ads" model, and will start running banner ads -- so who knows how
long the Crosswinds.Net site will be free of ads? But we can hope ...

I agree, it makes sense, HOWEVER, there is way more impact here than is
readily obvious. This will eliminate a BUNCH of sites from the
official list because they are using "free" hosting! Tripod,
GeoCities, etc. ALL get reimbursed for their "free" sites by selling
advertising on those sites. In essence this rule will make almost all
official sites be hosted on commercial servers (ie. the unit will have
to PAY for hosting - either directly in monthly hosting fees or
indirectly as a part of the webmasters dialup service).
