First off, let me re-intro myself, as a long-time reader but extremely
infrequent poster. As the saying goes, "I'd rather remain silent and let the
world think me a fool, than open my mouth and remove all doubt".
I might resolve that question right now: I'm a Scoutmaster in a
young-but-growing Troop. Our membership has increased 100% already this
year. I'm happy with that, but less than happy about what boils down to a
volunteer-vs-professional battleground. A key issue in the fight has been
money... "That's all you care about" accuses one side, while the other
responds, "If it weren't for us, you have no program!" and back and forth.
I have attempted to act as a mediator, trying to quell the worst of the
disputes, especially in front of and within earshot of the Scouts.
Today, I was informed by my DE that my money-earning application (a car
wash, no tickets, no uniforms, no nothin') would be denied. "It conflicts
with our FOS drive", says the DE. "You can go ahead with it, but you can't
use the Boy Scout name. Be a Church group, not a Scout Troop". As Tim
Allen would say, "Aaaaauuugh?"
Question 1: Has anybody been in this situation before?
Question 2: What did you do about it?
Question 3: Are there guidelines/rules about what constitutes a conflict
I refuse to become bitter or "anti-council", as I have seen happen to others
(and dang fine Scouters they be, too!). I am not poisoned, but I do have a
slightly bad taste in my mouth......
