My first response to my introduction on the Fragile X list (which of course
included my Scouting) included this:
>My sons were in Cub Scouts and they liked it very much but we could never
find any >Boy Scout group who would be willing to work with them because of
their Fragile X >and learning delays.
To paraphrase Eagle Scout Jim Lovell, "Irving, I think we have a problem."
If this is the first response I get to announcing my BSA activities to a list
of special needs parents, what does that hint at for the rest of the program?
Think they're doing any better on other lists in regards to Boy Scouts and
And not wishing to undercut GSUSA, however the 3rd one was from a woman who
had a daughter affected with this and she had to be the leader because no
other mother would deal with the special needs kids. Eventually she saw --
get this -- how much more BSA was doing in the area -- and had to get active
in her local council to try to bring GSUSA up to BSA speed there.
And given the first response, I would say we're both terribly behind.
