Several years ago we had the same problem- not having
enough boys from individual patrols attending events to
really use the patrol method. At a Klondike the boys that
attended, banded together in a rag tag group that chose
the appropriate name the "Griswalds" (as in Chevy Chase
movies). They pulled together and won first place. The
next event they decided to use the Griswald name
again...again first place. It's become a Troop tradition,
down to a G on the sleeve of our field uniform shirts.
Last Klondike we had three patrols, Griswald1, Griswald2
etc. We try to keep individual patrol members together
when possible but the idea of a "super" patrol has worked
for us. The guys are proud of their individual patrols
but can work together with other patrols when needed.
They even have a Griswald patrol yell.
