I tried mightily to avoid it, but, I have to say some words about Eagle
recognition and the cynicism of those who
A) don't want announcements of Eagle awards on Scouts-L, and,
B) don't think letters of congratulation are of any value.
To those in group "A" I ask: Is everything discussed on this list of such
dire importance, and earth shattering significance that we can't give up
some space to a reminder of why we are here in the first place? No, not
every boy need make Eagle, and I too am just as gratified by ANY small
achievement that just might owe something to Scouting. No, I don't read
every such post either, but, the knowledge that somewhere there is another
successful boy and a proud Scouter and or parent boasting warms this cynics
heart quite a bit.
Now to those letters. I ask you, what else in a young mans life can warrant
the issuing of letters of congratulation from presidents and leaders of
society? So what if they are "form" letters, the fact remains that there
ain't too many other young men with even lowly form letters to show. These
letters, certificates and other forms of recognition are but small
acknowledgements of how highly valued an Eagles' accomplishments are.
Encourage your boys to be proud, we should be also.
