Our Pack decided not to give this award. We had several reasons some of
which I remember. First of all, it is the leaders kids who are most likely
to get this award, and they get plenty of awards anyway. It encourages
Scouts for coming with runny noses, and who needs that. We also felt that
attendance generally was not a problem and that for those few scouts that it
was, the problem was beyond the scouts ability to solve (eg family work
schedules, family interest, .
Previously, our Pack had required 100% attendance at Pack and meetings. We
had some den leaders whose record keeping left much to be desired. We had
not been keeping attendance lists at Pack meetings. One Den leader "put in"
for the award for her son but had no records to prove it. Another Mom got
put out when her son didn't get the award. She claimed that he had been to
all the Pack meetings. We had not idea. There were no records for that
Den at all.
I would not do it this year. If you do it next year, in determining the
criteria, think about what you want to accomplish and who will be rewarded.
Keep careful records.
I think our 100% was not realistic.
