Sarah says regarding an SM dictating plans to the PLC that she would
like to bring it up at the committee meeting this weekend, but it could
backfire because all the ASMs and most of the committee just came over
from Cubs (as did the SM and CC), and many seem to still have that
adult-led Cub Scout mentality. What would you do if you were in our
I say that you should bring it up. The newbie ASM's need to find out
quickly that the boys are to be leading the Troop. Make it clear that
the activities would be great, but only if the PLC has bought into
them. Even if it winds up falling on deaf ears, continue to emphasize
having a boy-led troop at every opportunity. If your new ASM's &
Committee members are fixin' to go to training, they will have, at
least, heard the term "boy-led" and will be receptive to it.
Part of your job as Advancement Chair (and as a Committee Member) is to
insure that the SM & ASM's are providing a quality program to the Troop.
You ask about this during BOR's. If you feel that in order to provide
that program, the Troop must be boy-led, then it is your job to voice
that at committee meetings.
