I asked the PLC this year if they wanted to continue to use the
new Scout patrol or to filter the guys in to regular patrols
right away. The PLC overwhelmingly voted to use the new Scout Patrol.
Pluses for new Scout patrol: we have the new Scouts rotate Patrol
Leader each month. There's a Patrol Leader arm band and an assistant
Patrol Leader arm band. The APL becomes next month's PL and he picks
the next APL.
Pluses for NO new Scout Patrol:
Avoid built in need to reorganize patrol or having to "break up"
new Scout Patrol. By not having the reorganization, you should
have better patrol unity, identity, and spirit.
Avoid tendency to create patrols for each age level that get smaller
as you go up in age. New Scout patrols bond together and don't
want to go separate ways later.
In Troop 125 we plan troop elections for about the time Webelos
cross over - beginning of March. At the end of summer, after summer camp
and just as we start back to school, we have troop elections again.
The new Scouts patrol goes away at this time. At ALL troop elections,
Scouts have the option of moving to another patrol. There are restrictions
like not moving into a patrol that's already "full".
So at each troop election the PLC decides how many patrols we can support
based on current membership. Sometimes the new Scouts can stay in their
own patrol at the end of the summer if they wish, usually they need
to fill in the smaller patrols.
