This is an urban legend.
No, hantavirus is NOT an urban legend. It is a deadly respiratory illness
recently re-identified in the Four Corners area, but aslo found in other
states. It results in a very nasty rapid onset of pulmonary edema,
respiratory failure, and death within a very short time, like 24-48 hrs,
despite modern medical treatment and maximal life support. The virus is
carried by the rodents, identified as mice, and excreted in their urine and
maybe feces. The Four Corners cases were in people who went to reopen summer
lodging and cleared up the winter's messes after a particularly damp spring.
The damp spring made for more plants and thus more mouse food and therefore
more mice. Epidemiologists from the CDC actually asked the medicine men if
thre was a precendent in their oral tradition for a similar outbreak, and
found that wet springs and more mice in the past had been associated with
outbreaks of a respiratory illness w/ fatalities.
Hantavirus is also thought, on the basis if DNA testing, to perhaps be the
cause of the "sweating sickness" in medieval England which killed one of the
Henry kings (I forget which one) and arguably thus led to the reformation.
The rat urine on the cans, well, yes, that's bulls--t, and that IS an urban
legend. But hantavirus is actually real, and can even be found in your most
recent G2SS along with Lyme as something to watch out for.
