scouts-l Mail Archive for April of 2000: Re: Kick the can iced cream

I have done this for the past four years for a mid week treat at summer camp. I
use the no cook recipe out of the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Be sure and mix it up
We use a one pound coffee can and put in a couple of cups of mix in. Too much
mix and it will take too long to freeze. Tape the top with duct tape. Put the
one pound can inside a five pound coffee can. Add ice and a good bit of ice
cream salt. Then duct tape the top around the edge. Two scouts sit about 6
feet apart and roll the can to each other. If the can does not get frosty on
the outside then it's not going to get frosty on the inside. You probably need
more ice and salt. The duct tape keeps the salt water brine from spilling out
and it's the brine that causes the ice cream to freeze. Be careful when you
open the inside can and don't let any of the brine get into the ice cream.
Be sure to have enough materials so that no one has to wait for someone to
finish before they can start.
I would also be careful calling it "Kick the Can" ice cream. They might want to
give it a really good kick!
Have fun and enjoy.
